Wild- & erlebnispark Daun

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

In this third post about my holidays I would like to show you several photos I made during our trip to a wild-park in Daun.
This wild-park consists of a monkey valley, an 8 km long safari ride, a falkner show and a playground. We did not go to the playground but we did go to the other options.

Of the monkey valley I do not have a lot of good photos as there were a lot of trees and not very much light. This resulted in a bad quality on most of my photos, though I did manage to make a very cute one.

The safari went a lot better as there were more open spaces. There were loads of different animals like lamas, goats, donkeys, deers and wild boars.
The wild boars were especially fun as they had tons of piglets running around which is a very fun sight.

The falkner show was not extremely special though it did give me some nice photos of an eagle owl.

Germany – Vulkaneifel

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

This is the second in a short series of posts in which I will show you some photos of Germany which I made during the holidays.

As I told you in my previous post I went to Germany for the holidays. I went there with a bunch of friends.
We had loads of fun doing all kinds of things. We’ve ‘hiked’ through nature, we’ve done ‘safaris’ in wild-parks, we’ve visited towns and cities and we got lost in the woods in the middle of the night.
Now I’m not going to bore you with all of the stories (although that last one was rather funny) but I will show you some of the pictures I made during some of these trips.

The lodging we lived in during our vacation was located in the Vulkaneifel, a very beautiful, inactive volcano area in Germany.
Volcano soil is very fertile so everything grows well which results in a lot of vegetation. The dead volcano craters are usually filled with water. These volcano lakes are really beautiful as the water is very blue and there’s usually a lot of trees and other vegetation around them which makes for nice pictures.
Also, apart from the craters, there are quite a lot of mountains on which you have a brilliant view.

These pictures were all made around a group of 3 of these volcano lakes.

Efteling

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Today I’ve been to one of the biggest entertainment parks in the Netherlands: The Efteling.
I haven’t been to many entertainment parks in my life (very little actually) and I think I’d been in a roller-coaster once before which was a looong time ago so it was all pretty exciting.
I went there with a bunch of colleagues from the internship I’ve done this year, just a final day of fun as a lot of us are leaving because we are done.

Of course this was a very nice opportunity to get out my camera and shoot some pictures.
Overall the weather was really nice which made shooting the photos all the easier.

Practice shoot

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

I’ve recently been asked to play ‘official photographer’ at a church activity we’re going to have soon.
At this activity people can have their photos made for a small price which goes to a good cause.

This afternoon I had a practice shoot with my mom and 2 good friends of mine just to get a little feeling for it (as I’ve never really done anything like this before).
As it turned out that was a pretty good idea because I made a few mistakes I now know I have avoid next time.
I used two construction lights to manipulate the lighting which turned out pretty handy.
However, the amount of light coming from those lamps wasn’t as much as I thought so a lot of the photos are a little blurry.
I can solve this by increasing the ISO settings a little (they were at only 100) so that should help.

Apart from the photos being somewhat blurry I quite like the result though so I have good hopes. It’s not as if I’m expensive anyways.

Windmills on Kinderdijk

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Ok, time for some new photos.
Yesterday the weather was great so I decided to go out and shoot a bunch of photos. The windmills on Kinderdijk have been on my list for a while and I thought the weather was really nice for some windmill photos so that’s where I went.

I have to say I definitely don’t regret going there as I really like the outcome of some of the pictures.
The pictures were made around sunset which I hadn’t really done before a lot so I just went and played around with my camera settings which was lots of fun.

At home I edited some of the photos to gray scale which I think gives them a real old look like those photos you see in museums sometime.

Precision mechanics

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Hello everyone, it’s time for my first post this year!
It’s been a while since I posted, I’ve been a little busy and haven’t had a lot of time for photography.
Over the past few months I have been making some photos at work though and I thought people might like to see some of those.

Right now I am in my last year of school which consists of half a year theory lessons and a final internship of about half a year.
Since I already did the theory lessons last year I just had the internship left.
My internship is at the Neuroscience department in the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam. Basically they gave me a problem and I had to think of a solution and make it.
The problem they gave me is as following:
One of the things Neuroscience researches is hand-eye coordination to detect Alzheimer disease or brain damage caused by internal bleedings. This research is done using a research assembly the people there have created over the years.
This assembly however is not very flexible. Everything is completely fixed and it is very hard to move. This is why they would like to have a new assembly which differs in height to match different patients and is easily movable.
Also they would like to be able to change some other things in the assembly, but I’m not going in to too much detail as that would be a very long story.

In the first few months of my internship I have created a full design for the new assembly and I am working on parts for that assembly now.
These photos are from two of the somewhat bigger parts which were quite a challenge to make.

More snow

Monday, December 21st, 2009

It’s been snowing a lot over the weekend so the amount of snow compared to last week has increased a lot.
This morning however no snow was falling down and the sky was pretty much clear of clouds which gave a very nice opportunity to make some photos of the sunrise and the snow in the sun.

First snow, December 2009

Friday, December 18th, 2009

It’s winter in Holland and there’s no doubt about it anymore: We’ve got snow!
It started snowing yesterday morning. I tried making a few quick photos at the time but it was a bit too dark because I had to get up early for work and didn’t have much time to try and make some good photos with a tripod or something like that. I took a few photos at work too, most of them not that special, but I liked the ones I posted here (the first 2 in the list).
When I got back from work most of the snow had already melted away so I was kind of disappointed. Luckily it started snowing again in the evening.
All the snow was really great, and although I had to cycle through it for about an hour through the snowy weather (and of course another hour later on  to get back home, it didn’t snow at that time anymore though) it was lots of fun.
Because I got home pretty late I didn’t make any photos again, but I knew it was going to be freezing during the night so the snow would still be there in the morning.
I was right, the snow was still there, so I decided to go to work a little later so I could go out and take some photos while it was a little lighter (I still can’t really get the hang of taking photos in the dark).
I hope that there’s still more snow to come because Christmas holidays just started, though I’m afraid it’s not going to be a white Christmas as the forecast is rain the day before Christmas…

Oh well, at least I got some nice pictures this morning.

This week has seen quite a bit of rain and autumn weather which resulted in mushrooms coming out of the ground everywhere.

Moms fake flowers

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Lately I’ve been practicing a bit trying some new things because I don’t always have the time to go out into nature to make photos.
I’ve especially been trying some still life photography, it’s something you can easily practice at home (although I find it quite hard to get a good picture) and I think it’s fun to do.

Not too long ago I tried a few things with some fake flowers my mom had standing somewhere in the living room.
This is all done with the light coming from the window as I don’t have any good light sources myself yet (I am definitely not going to use the standard flash on my camera).
