Hello everyone, it’s time for my first post this year!
It’s been a while since I posted, I’ve been a little busy and haven’t had a lot of time for photography.
Over the past few months I have been making some photos at work though and I thought people might like to see some of those.
Right now I am in my last year of school which consists of half a year theory lessons and a final internship of about half a year.
Since I already did the theory lessons last year I just had the internship left.
My internship is at the Neuroscience department in the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam. Basically they gave me a problem and I had to think of a solution and make it.
The problem they gave me is as following:
One of the things Neuroscience researches is hand-eye coordination to detect Alzheimer disease or brain damage caused by internal bleedings. This research is done using a research assembly the people there have created over the years.
This assembly however is not very flexible. Everything is completely fixed and it is very hard to move. This is why they would like to have a new assembly which differs in height to match different patients and is easily movable.
Also they would like to be able to change some other things in the assembly, but I’m not going in to too much detail as that would be a very long story.
In the first few months of my internship I have created a full design for the new assembly and I am working on parts for that assembly now.
These photos are from two of the somewhat bigger parts which were quite a challenge to make.

It’s been snowing a lot over the weekend so the amount of snow compared to last week has increased a lot.
This morning however no snow was falling down and the sky was pretty much clear of clouds which gave a very nice opportunity to make some photos of the sunrise and the snow in the sun.

It’s winter in Holland and there’s no doubt about it anymore: We’ve got snow!
It started snowing yesterday morning. I tried making a few quick photos at the time but it was a bit too dark because I had to get up early for work and didn’t have much time to try and make some good photos with a tripod or something like that. I took a few photos at work too, most of them not that special, but I liked the ones I posted here (the first 2 in the list).
When I got back from work most of the snow had already melted away so I was kind of disappointed. Luckily it started snowing again in the evening.
All the snow was really great, and although I had to cycle through it for about an hour through the snowy weather (and of course another hour later on to get back home, it didn’t snow at that time anymore though) it was lots of fun.
Because I got home pretty late I didn’t make any photos again, but I knew it was going to be freezing during the night so the snow would still be there in the morning.
I was right, the snow was still there, so I decided to go to work a little later so I could go out and take some photos while it was a little lighter (I still can’t really get the hang of taking photos in the dark).
I hope that there’s still more snow to come because Christmas holidays just started, though I’m afraid it’s not going to be a white Christmas as the forecast is rain the day before Christmas…
Oh well, at least I got some nice pictures this morning.

This week has seen quite a bit of rain and autumn weather which resulted in mushrooms coming out of the ground everywhere.
Here are a few photos I made of some of the big ones.

Lately I’ve been practicing a bit trying some new things because I don’t always have the time to go out into nature to make photos.
I’ve especially been trying some still life photography, it’s something you can easily practice at home (although I find it quite hard to get a good picture) and I think it’s fun to do.
Not too long ago I tried a few things with some fake flowers my mom had standing somewhere in the living room.
This is all done with the light coming from the window as I don’t have any good light sources myself yet (I am definitely not going to use the standard flash on my camera).

Last week when I came home from work I noticed some cool looking clouds from my room so I took some photos from them from my balcony.
The light was really nice and I quite like the result.

Like I promised, some more photos from Germany.
Since our accommodation wasn’t too far from Heidelberg we decided to go there for a day to do some sightseeing.
Everyone that had been there and told me about it was quite enthusiastic and the others liked the idea too. We weren’t disappointed.
The first impression we got when driving into Heidelberg was simply that of a very busy city in which traffic is a mess. (Isn’t it always…)
It took us a while to find a good parking spot, but once we found one and we got out of the car the fun began.
Heidelberg is the home of quite a lot of churches of which we’ve seen several.
The styles in which these churches are built are very different from each other.
The Heiligegeistkirche, in which the Heidelberg catechism was signed, is a very old church. It’s quite dark inside (which is the reason I didn’t make a lot of photos) and the first impression is one of a thirteen-in-a-dozen old church.
Once you start looking around you’ll notice a few odd things which make this church really fun to walk through.
The most remarkable are the leaded glass windows of which most of them appear to have no connection whatsoever with the bible, which is something they usually do in these kind of churches.
I’ve added a photo of one which I found particularly interesting.
If you look at the window the first thing you really see is the text. Since I can’t read German I usually skip reading the text and just look at the rest of the window.
Now once you take a closer look at the window you can see something really odd. It says ‘E=mc²’ somewhere halfway the window. This is a formula that Einstein thought of with his theory of relativity (if I’m correct).
This made me wonder a whole lot why this was placed on the window.
The text didn’t really clear it up a lot, it says something like: Gods grace will never leave you in times of trouble. (This is a very simple translation, my German isn’t the best.)
The date at the bottom was quite clear though, this window remembers the second world war.
I still have no idea what Einsteins theory has to do with this exactly though, but it’s quite fun to see.
One of the other churches, a Jesuit church, is completely different from the Heiligegeistkirche.
The style in which it is build is very different, with much more expensive ornaments.
It is a very beautiful building, both from the outside and from the inside.
The inside of the church is very light, which made it a lot easier to make some photos.
As you can see on the photos this church contains a lot of gilded ornaments, as well as huge wall paintings with vivid colors which really stand out from the white walls.
Of course there’s a lot more then churches alone in Heidelberg.
For example the castle on top of the hill is really something to visit.
I don’t really have any good photo’s from the castle itself as from down below it was really hard to find a decent spot and the photos I made while we were in there just aren’t really good.
I’ve made some photos from the city from up there though and those turned out quite nice.

As I still haven’t got a lot of new material which I feel like showing to you I am going to continue posting some older photos.
In the summer of 2008 I went on holiday to Germany with a few friends of mine.
I can’t remember exactly the name of the town we where in but I know it was in the vicinity of Mannheim.
We’ve been there about 7 days in which we’ve done a lot of sightseeing though nature and some of the nearby cities.
I have to say that you can’t find that much nature here in Holland, it was very cool to walk through and of course, take photo’s of.
Because these photos were made quite some time ago my techniques were somewhat different from my techniques nowadays (you could say I really liked to point and click and I had a little less feeling for composition).
Nevertheless a lot of the photos are quite nice and easily fixed with a little cropping.
I am not going to post all of the photos in one bunch, I think it’s nicer to split them up in a few posts because some of them are made in a specific city. It’s better to keep those together.

As you may have noticed it’s been a little while since I uploaded some new photo’s.
The main reason for that is not that I forgot to, but because I haven’t made a lot of photo’s lately.
Well… I have made some photo’s, but don’t expect me to show those to you anytime soon cause they’re not meant for you guys.
Anyway, I thought it might be nice to show you some older photo’s.
A friend of mine pointed me to some nice photo’s I made a few years ago when we went to the zoo with a couple of other friends.
I hadn’t seen those in a while so it was pretty fun to look back at them, and there actually a few photo’s I quite liked.
These photo’s were made just a few months after I got my camera, that was the time I was more interested in using photo’s randomly in Photoshop then photography itself.
The overall quality of the photo’s is therefore visibly less then most photo’s I make nowadays, they’re just fun photo’s.
The photo’s I’m posting here are the one’s most appealing or most fun from the series.

Two days ago my mom, my oldest brother and I went to the Nieuwkoopse Plassen for a boat trip.
We hired a small silent motorboat with which we could enter the area.
My brother and I both had our camera with us so we shot quite some photos together, mostly for practice and some for sheer fun.
I quickly came to realize that it’s not that easy to take photos from a moving boat. Whenever I saw something interesting to try and make a photo of I had to be really quick to get it right.
The boat going up and down was also something which turned out to be quite annoying. Sometimes the subject was a lot more to the bottom of the photo then I wanted and sometimes it was just blurry because of sudden movement.
It was a very nice afternoon though and since we spent about 4 hours in that boat I also had plenty of time to just relax and lie around (like a pirate who doesn’t do anything).
Some of the photos I made turned out quite well, so I would like to show a few of these to you.
